Why 10K pacing mistakes are less forgiving than half marathon ones
A half marathon is raced at roughly 83–88% of VO₂max — hard, but with enough aerobic margin that a slightly-too-fast first 5K is often recoverable, if painful, by the finish. A 10K is raced at 90–95% of VO₂max — closer to the edge for the entire distance. There's less slack to absorb an early pacing mistake.
This is why 10K blowups tend to happen earlier — often by kilometre 6 or 7 — and feel different from a half marathon fade. It's less a gradual, glycogen-driven decline and more an anaerobic one: you simply can't sustain the effort you started at, because you started too close to your ceiling from the gun.

How to pace the first 2 kilometres
Start at goal pace, not faster — the temptation to bank time early is stronger in a 10K than in longer races, because the whole thing is over sooner and the urge to 'get going' is higher. Resist it. Check your watch at kilometre 1; if you're ahead of goal pace, ease back deliberately.
Unlike a half marathon, where starting 10-15 seconds per km slower than goal pace for the first 5K is good advice, a 10K doesn't have the same room — running meaningfully slower than goal pace early just pushes an unsustainable pace requirement onto the second half. The target for a 10K's opening kilometres is closer to even pacing, with a very slight bias toward controlled rather than aggressive.

Warm-up matters more for a 10K than for longer races
Because a 10K is raced near threshold-and-above effort from the start, arriving under-warmed costs you more than it would in a half marathon or marathon, where the first few kilometres naturally serve as a gentle ramp into effort. A proper warm-up should include 10–15 minutes of easy jogging plus 3–4 short strides building to close to race pace, finishing 10–15 minutes before the gun.
Skipping the warm-up and treating the race's own first kilometre as the warm-up — a reasonable strategy for a marathon — costs real time in a 10K, because you're asking your body to hit near-threshold effort cold.
Fueling and hydration for a 10K
For most runners finishing in 40–70 minutes, in-race fueling isn't necessary — the distance and duration don't approach the point of meaningful glycogen depletion. A light carbohydrate-focused breakfast 2–3 hours before the race is sufficient preparation.
Hydration during the race is optional for most conditions; a sip at a water station past the halfway point is reasonable in warm weather, but stopping to drink meaningfully costs more time relative to a 10K's total duration than it would in a longer race.
Race week and race morning
As with any distance, reduce volume in the final week and prioritise sleep — nothing done in race week meaningfully improves fitness, but poor sleep or a last-minute hard session can meaningfully hurt performance.
Race morning: a familiar, carbohydrate-based breakfast 2–3 hours before the start, and enough time to complete a proper warm-up without rushing. Arriving with only enough time for a rushed warm-up (or none at all) is a common, avoidable way to underperform relative to actual fitness.
